Sóc Trăng, derived from the Khmer name of Srok Kh'leang, meaning "silver depository" (as it was where the Khmer King's silver treasury was located), is a city in the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam.
The city is famous for it's signature foods, bún nước lèo (similar to bún mắm) and bánh bía (a sweet pastry) and is one of the main producers of bánh phồng tôm in Vietnam.
Sóc Trăng is covered by vast rice paddies, shrimp lagoons, luxuriant fruit gardens like longans, rambutans, durians, and oranges.
The population consists mainly of Viet (Kinh), Khmer, and Hoa ethnic groups. The province has 89 pagodas of the Khmer group and 47 pagodas of the Hoa people, the Khmer Chùa Dơi (Bat Pagoda) and Chùa Đất Sét (Clay Pagoda) being the most famous.
